I have great pleasure in announcing that The English Martyrs History Department is offering a school trip to the vibrant city of Krakow, Poland; departing Thursday, 23rd May 2019 by coach to the airport. We will spend 3 nights in Poland and then return on Sunday, 26th May in the evening.
The purpose of this visit is to provide students with the unique opportunity of exploring Krakow, including a life-changing trip to the infamous death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, a trip to the Wieliczka Salt-Mines, a tour of Krakow, a visit to the Oskar Schindler Museum as well as meeting a Holocaust survivor. The focus of this trip links directly to our GCSE Unit 2 – Weimar and Nazi Germany, 1919-39; worth 20% of the overall GCSE grade. It also links to the A-Level unit of Democracy and Dictatorships, worth 15% of the overall A-Level grade.
This trip will allow students to experience History in a different format, with a ‘hands on’ approach to their course that they are currently studying. We feel it is important that our students have the opportunity to take part in such a unique educational visit, as it enhances the learning that takes place in the classroom and helps to embed a real understanding the world around us.
The cost of the trip is provisionally £600 which includes:
- Coach Excursion to Auschwitz-Birkenau and guided tour
- Visit to Schindler Museum with a guide
- 4 Hour Guide in Krakow
- Guided Visit to Wieliczka Salt Mine
- Visit to Galicia Jewish Museum Including Exhibition Tour
- Meeting with a Concentration Camp Survivor or Relative at the Galicia Museum
- A trip to the Galeria Krakowska Shopping Mall
- Hotel with breakfast each morning and all evening meals
In order to travel students must have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The medical insurance cards can be obtained online if you do not already have one. Pupils will also need an up to date and a valid passport.
Places are available to all students in Year 10 and Year 12 only, and possibly some Year 9 students who are definitely taking History at GCSE. Reservation of a place on this trip is dependent upon the continued good behaviour and attitude of your child. There is a maximum of 30 places available and these places will be offered on a first come first served basis. Students who are not initially selected will be listed as reserves. Unsuccessful students will have their deposits returned.
We ask that all payments are paid through the Parentpay system as this reduces the risk for students bringing large amounts of cash into school. You can log into Parentpay at www.parentpay.co.uk using your unique login and password. If you wish your child to be considered, please complete and submit the reply form at the bottom of this page as soon as possible please. A non-refundable deposit of £125 will be required to be paid via the Parentpay on-line payment system by Friday 30th November.
When you submit the reply slip below the information will be sent to us, we will process and add your child to the trip in Parent Pay. Please allow 24 hours for this to happen, longer if it is a weekend.
Subsequent instalments will be required as follows:
Friday 30th November 2018 – £125
Friday 25th January 2019 – £125
Thursday 14th March 2019 – £350
If your child is successful in gaining a place, but then has to withdraw, any money paid can only be returned if his/her place is filled by another student.

Parents who can prove they are in receipt of the following benefits will be exempt from paying the cost of board and lodgings for educational trips within the school term (this will be £135 discount):
- Income Support;
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance;
- Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999;
- Child Tax Credit, provided that Working Tax Credit is not also received and the family’s income (as assessed by the Inland Revenue) does not exceed £16,190 (FY 2017-2018);
- Guarantee element of State Pension Credit.
