On a snowy Sunday afternoon at the end of January, EMS6 student William Hartley warmed the hearts of spectators gathered in the Classical Cafe in Middlesbrough where he treat them to a Piano Recital of the highest standard.

Talented pianist Will, who receives tuition at The Sage in Gateshead, passed his Grade 8 Piano with Distinction just before Christmas, meaning he was well equipt to perform a programme of music including works by composers such as Beethoven, Chopin and Elgar.

A stalwart of the Music and Performing Arts Department at EMS, Will is at most events and plays regularly in the school Orchestra, although not on piano. His other favoured instrument is the Bassoon which he also gets tuition for at the Sage.

A busy young man, Will is Principal Bassoonist of Tees Valley Youth Orchestra and plays in Young Sinfonia at The Sage.

When not playing, Will loves to conduct. On occasion, he has led EMS Orchestra rehearsals and whilst in Year 12 he was granted the privilege to be one of the only students to ever conduct the EMS Orchestra at the annual Summer Concert 2017.

Now in Year 13, he is concentrating on his studies before embarking on a gap year where he intends to gain more experience playing and perfecting his craft further.  He then hopes to continue his studies at one of the Royal Conservatories.

We look forward to seeing what the future holds.
