This year’s Chess Tournament, held on Tuesday 3rd July, was another great event with 22 Year 7 to Year 10 students competing during the day in the Conference Room. Students played 6 games in the morning, with the results producing seeding for the knock-out stages in the afternoon.

This year’s winner was Samuel Casey (9TM2) who follows in the footsteps of older brother Brandon in picking up the trophy. Runner-up was last year’s champion, Joe Spaldin (10MC2), who contributed to an engrossing final. Charlotte Brown (9JI1) edged out Jack Buttery (10MC2) in a see-saw match, and picked up the Year 9/10 Merit Award.

Losing quarter-finalists were Liam Morrison (9TM1), Samuel Duong (8MC1), Sophie Hughes (9MC1) and Dion Lee (7TM1) and all did well to reach this stage and all had their successes during the day. Dion pipped Samuel for the Year 7/8 Merit Award and finished strongly in his first year in the competition.

Mr Hammond presented the trophies and all competitors received a medal to congratulate them on their participation. All played well and behaved superbly despite the warm conditions. Ethan Hardy, Josh Smart, Jonathan Rooney, Harry Walker, Ryan Duong, Sonny Paylor, Carter Williamson Matthew Tyson, Oliver Tierney, Harvey Whitfield, Harry Clyne, Aidan Hammond, Matthew Gallagher and Rhys Pearson all had their moments and contributed to an enjoyable day.

Mr Edwards thanks all of them for their support and hopes they can all keep playing chess in the years to come.
