On Tuesday 28th April 2017 it was the turn of our school chess fanatics to battle it out in this year’s House Chess Tournament. House points were up for grabs and with 3 time champion Brandon Casey not in the competition (now Year 11 and not eligable to compete) that elusive trophy was also up for grabs!
26 Year 7-10 students took part and made it the best one ever! After each player had completed 7 games in the morning, the top 16 played in the knockout stage. It all culminated in JOE SPALDIN (9MC2) defeating CHARLOTTE BROWN (8JI1) in a very close final, with only a couple of pawns difference as the time limit was reached. Both had been unbeaten up to the final – a great effort.
Jack Buttery (9MC2) came a deserved 3rd, with Joshua Cain (10TM1) a battling 4th. There were good efforts from a range of players; notably, Sophie Shotton (8JI1), Samuel Duong (7MC2), Samuel Casey (8TM2) and Max Wheeler (9JB2) reaching the quarter-finals.
All competitors received a medal for participating, with the individual house trophies going to: Joe Spaldin (9MC2), Charlotte Brown (8JI1), Josh Cain (10TM1), Jack Burns (7AL2) and Max Wheeler (9JB2).
The House points were awarded as: MC 8, JI 5, TM 3, AL 2 and JB 1.
Well done to all the competitors! Can Joe Spaldin retain his trophy next year? We will see!
